Arboreal
Made in response to periods of time spent within two specific woodland areas in Northern England, these paintings reflect something of the structure and essence of those sites. Almost inevitably a sense of verticality has prevailed in the work but, through the specific qualities of the media used, the physical and metaphoric complexity of the "texture" of woodland is also explored and acknowledged. The fluidity and unpredictability of watercolour echoes the organic nature of the woodland, while the build up of texture in the acrylic paintings bears witness to the physicality of the place. It is the ambiguities, patterns and relationships that emerge that bring meaning to the work.
